Mama’s Funky Flow

A while ago I reviewed the 7″ single Linda Morena, by Quantic and His Combo Bárbaro. The song I based my review on back then actually was the album version of Linda Morena, instead of the much shorter single edit (8:29 vs 4:58). This will probably mean they have drastically reduced solo time, but fear not, the full track that I raved about back then is apparently the album version. The double vinyl gatefold Tradition in Transition LP is shipping since june 29th followed by an official (other stores) release on july 6th, while the 7″ of Linda Morena b/w Enyere Kumbara has been available for a few weeks now. Quantic has just finished a small tour promoting the new album with a bunch of DJ sets. It is high time that I write a complete review of the album, not only because of the aforementioned dates, but also because the album has been in high rotation ever since the disc dropped on my doormat. The Jazz-a-palooza festival ended with the live funk explosion by the Rare Groove Orchestra, which incinerated the place and rained our pores. And from what I’ve heard it’s a pity I had to miss the Dutch Organ Group.
So to our great pleasure we had the honor to finish the festival, and we poured out the heaviest tunes from all funky genres to keep the crowd energized and moving.

Due to recent bandwith problems (limit of 29Gb exceeded), only half of the set is in this podcast, plus it’s in mono. However, both halves can be played & downloaded from last.fm (in stereo!): First half of this set on last.fm, second half of the set at last.fm.

I case you had to miss us last saturday, the next gig is this friday @ Club Djazzive (SJU) and then every first friday except september, supplemented by a gig on August 28th (thanks to Sugaspank) and September 25th.

Just received a press notice, Tru Thoughts signees Hot 8 Brass Band (myspace) are going to set fire to european stages this summer. For you dutchies, there’s a few appearances at North Sea Jazz, but more important, also a FREE performance on July 9th at Rotown, for North Sea Around Town (last.fm event). The latter (NSAT) is a cool side event to NSJ, especially if like me you couldn’t afford that expensive NSJ ticket but still want to see some hot music. It wasn’t crowded, but still a good time to funk out. Due to a human factors error in transferring the recordings, only the first half hour is preserved. But please enjoy!

The MadFreshFu*k friday night experience continues with this summery edition @ Club Djazzive (SJU)

No Band! Because of the summer there will be  no bands, just DJ’s in the SJU every Friday. This means that teh evenings start at 23:00 and last as long as you (and enough other people) stay. Perfect timing to end your day of summer fun (or hard work, for some of us), by going for a lazy skank or a sweaty groove with nice people at the SJU!
