Mama's Funky Flow

  • DJ Set 05-02-2010 @ Fudge (SJU)

    February 7th, 2010 . by zephir

Fiiiiinaaaallly we got to play the SJU again in the funky fresh new year of 2010. Needless to say, we were really eager to rock the decks and have you guys shake it all over the SJU. So, after a steady warm-up by the Skarabeez, we took to the tables and from the look of the dance floor delivered as promised. The SJU remained filled until four, apparently the crowd had a good time and so did we. Listen to the first 90 minutes of funk below.

Happy New Year! The first upcoming gig is almost here, it’s your first chance to groove to the Funky Fresh sounds of Mama’s Funky Flow in 2010!

In case you forgot what we mean by FUNKY FRESH, here’s a recording of the last gig we did in 2009.  We present part 1 on this site (and via the podCast), and part 2 & part 3 on the good ol’ MFF last.fm page, in the Live @ SJU 2009 album.

    No tracklist, just music. Enjoy!

[review] The Bamboos – On the Sly 12″ (TRU211)

    December 19th, 2009 . by zephir

ontheslyAlthough I thoroughly love the deep funk & soul grooves by the Bamboos, I feel that in these songs, the sparkle is missing. Sure, Kylie Auldist has the soul and she pours it all out like she should in ‘On the Sly’. And yes, Lyrics Born provides floor filling shouty lyrics on ‘Turn it Up’ (reviewed as a digital single a while back). But I think musically I’d expect The Bamboos to up the ante more. ‘On the Sly’ does not really add anything new to the existing collaborations between Lance and Kylie (previous Bamboos, Cooking on 3 Burners & Kylie Auldist solo). And the Turn it Up track is decent, but not what I’d expect from a collaboration by two of my favourite artists.

Maybe I am too harsh on The Bamboos, maybe I expect too much, but as it stands they have managed to underwhelm me a few times now. Don’t get me wrong though, I still think this is good and proper Funk/Soul material. I just expected more, or different, or better from these guys. So, although it’ll be nice to have ‘Turn It Up’ on vinyl for the old skool DJ’s, I think I’ll just wait for the album to drop. Mind you, this material is still good enough to keep me on the lookout for that ‘4’ album. But it’s just not good enough to want to go to etchshop and order immediately.

In the mean time, enjoy this video of ‘On the Sly’:

February 5th: The Skarabeez & Mama’s Funky Flow @ Fudge (SJU)

    December 6th, 2009 . by zephir

It’s a new year, and it’s our first gig of 2010! To mark this first time of the year, the SJU has planned something extra special. Not a funk band, but you will find that there is undeniably some funky brass in this combo. To make this first friday extra partylicious the band playing are the Skarabeez, an outfit specialized in ska and uptempo reggae,  who have proven to be able to get the SJU jumping and grooving on previous occasions. After this jump-up experience, it is time to get down with the dirty raw funksters of Mama’s Funky Flow, serving you raw funk in their well known funky fresh style.

With: Mama’s Funky Flow (cptNemo & Zephir)

    Band: Skarabeez

Damage: 22:00-23:00 free, after that 5 euros. (RSVP @ last.fm)
